Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How can I join GUSC?
A. Anyone who's a student at Glasgow Uni can join GUSC. Try to come to the Sports Fair or Watersports Day in freshers week, but you can join the club at anytime through the year. Membership is about £30 for the year. For insurance purposes, you also need to be a member of the SRS, which is about £30 a year aswell - go into the gym (Steevie Blg).
Q. How can I get on a team?
A. The teams for the year are chosen at Team Trials, in late September / early October. If you've missed the team trials, we often need people to fill in at league weekends, so keep your ears open!
Q. Is there a mailing list or something for the club? How can i get on it?
A. We send out most of our info by email, so if your inbox isnt full with emails about open sailing and team training, you're probably not on the list.
Just send an email to sailing-committee@gla.ac.uk and we'll add you.
Q. Who/what is SUSA? BUSA?
A. SUSA - Scottish University Sailing Association. They organise all the league racing and a few other events throught the year.
BUSA is the British equivelent, the teams that do best in the SUSA leagues go through to the BUSA finals in April.
Q. What do the Committee do, how can I get invloved?
A. The committe organise everything that goes on in the club, from racing to drinking to this lovely website. You can find the committe members for this year are on the Committe Page. A new committee is elected each year at our AGM in April - any member can go for the positions, although to run for Commodore you need to have been on the Committee atleast once before.
Q. Those hoodies and jackets look pretty sexy. How can I get one?
A. We put in the orders at some random point throughout the year, probably after the teams are set up.
Q. What should I wear when sailing?
A. The club has a collection of wetsuits to keep your warm(ish) and spraysuits to keep you dry(ish). Usually it's your feet that get cold first, so try to find some wooly socks!
If you do plenty of sailing, you can pick up your own wetsuit for about £100. A drysuit will cost about £200, the equipment of choice for most of our team sailors because it'll keep you warm in the coldest day in january.
If you just come along to open sailing from time to time, probably the best thing to invest in is a pair of dinghy boots - they'll keep your feet a lot warmer than just a pair of Cons, and only cost about £35.
Q. So where can I get hold of some kit?
A. There are plenty of places online that sell kit, they're usually good for prices and delivery times.
If you want to go try stuff on, the easiest chanderly in Glasgow to get to is Duncans - get the tube to West Street underground, and it's about 30m up the street, on the left.
Q. Why is Pistol Pete called Pistol Pete?
A. Because he's the fastest minibus driver in the west!
