A Fresher's Guide to GUSC

This page has everything you should need to know about GUSC if you're new, so keep reading to find out what we're up to in Freshers Week and beyond!

Check out the Calendar for all the details and dates.

Fresher's Week
Freshers week is the best week of your uni life, enjoy it, sure you'll bump into us at some point.

You can come and visit us at the Sports Fair on Tue + Wed the 15th and 16th, in the Stevenson Building (the Gym). Here you can ask us anything you want to know, see what GUSC has to offer, and possibly pick up some freebies! Look for the boats on University Avenue.

First chance to get sailing will be on the Friday, whether you're an experienced sailor or you've never sailed before but want to get out the city and into the sunshine for an afternoon, come along to our Open Day on Friday 18th. We can bus you to Bardowie Loch, and have all the kit you need. Its going to run 12-5, buses leaving from the main gates on university avenue. After we get back we're going to have a social in curlers on byres road at 7.30, there's going to be free food and cheap booze, good way to start the night. Even if you don't make it out sailing come down and meet the crew. Looks like it'll be the mighty viper after.

The Yacht Cruise
Our annual yacht cruise is the biggest weekend of the year, and it's the best way to get to know people in the club. We hire six 37 foot yachts (like the one top right of the screen) and set upon the scenic west coast of Scotland. The weekend goes something like this:
Friday Evening - Arrive on boat. Start drinking.
Saturday - sail to the scenic village of Tarbet. Drink even more.
Sunday - sail home, try not to die of hangover.
Keep an eye on this site for more info on the Yacht Cruise.
This year it looks like we will be heading down to Galloway sailing centre this year.

Cheese and Wine
The yearly Cheese and Wine night will probably be the first Friday of term, September 25th. Wine is more the emphasis than the cheese (not that the cheese isn't worth munching), we party in a specially selected flat, then head out the Hive at the GU to continue the mess.

Team Trials
Traditionally, Team Trials are held the morning after cheese and wine, and this year should be no exception! This is important, so the team captains can see if you can sail with a hangover, the general health status at a League weekend.

If your a team racing pro, or never tried it before, haul your ass out of bed and jump in one of our Fireflies to show off some skills. If you're up to scratch you'll be picked for one of our racing teams for the year, but if you don't make it onto a team we always need people to cover a few missing persons at the league weekends, so keep your ears peeled!
